Deciding on a career change? Going back to school is the way to do it!

Deciding on a career right now? Not exactly sure which direction to turn? Well, it’s a great thing then that you’re thinking about returning to the classroom sometime soon.

You’ve got a lot to think about right now, however. From note taking activities that will help you retain all the information you need to get great grades to balancing your work and school schedules, going back to school can be pretty overwhelming sometimes. That’s why you’ll want to use the following tips when deciding on a career change.

Deciding On A Career Change? Here’s 3 Tips

If you’re currently working at a dead-end job or are simply looking to do something different, going back to school is a great catalyst for change. Here are three tips you may want to follow to help you make that career change.

  1. The first tip is probably the most obvious, but still it’s worth mentioning. When you’re deciding on a career change, do some research for the institution that has the major you’re looking for. Is your future major going to open up the kind of career opportunities you’d like to explore? Will you make contacts in your industry and have internship opportunities that can result in future employment? This is something you’ll really want to think about. For example, maybe you love English. The written word brings you great joy, whether you’re writing or reading. But is a degree in English going to open up career options that you want to explore? Maybe you have a passion for sports? If so, a Kinesiology degree with an emphasis on sports management might be a better option. Just make sure to do your homework so you know about all of the majors at your disposal.
  2. Let’s say you’ve found your school and the major you wish take. It’s probably a good idea to chat with an academic adviser within your department. These professionally trained experts can give you a lot of background information – and possibly even contacts in your field – that will help to propel you along your journey.
  3. One tip that seems to go overlooked far too often is students visiting their professors during office hours. Too many students simply go to class, take exams, and go home. They don’t realize the fantastic resource their own professors are. Think of office hours as free-of-charge advising. These office hours are for you – the student – so take advantage of them early and often. Who knows, you may find yourself with a mentor for life!

As you can see, deciding on a career change doesn’t have to be super stressful. In fact, it can be a rather enjoyable and rewarding ride.
